Company description
HIS Storehouse NPC is a section 21/non-profit company (NPC 2013/151983/08) started in August 2013 as a calling to bring glory to God by feeding the hungry, with a special emphasis on children and the elderly.
We are all aware that the need is great – not just “out there”, but right on our doorsteps – and there are many impoverished communities who are stuck in a poverty cycle and can be aided to have hope for a better future just by having at least one meal a day. Our primary emphasis is on children and secondly on the elderly & sick; mainly due to the fact that children are the most vulnerable and (in most cases) unable to provide for themselves.
In the first 4 months of our existence, we provided around 4,500 meals per month, and at the beginning of 2014 it increased to 7,000 meals per month. However, sadly, this is not even making a dent!
Our aim is to provide 100,000 meals per month, but we can’t do this alone.
Our philosophy and business model centres on the concept of providing the “raw” ingredients necessary for a good & wholesome meal. By leaving the preparation of the actual meal up to the school, family or organisation that we support, we believe that the recipient will not view their meals as a “simple handout”, as they become actively involved in helping themselves and enriching their both their bodies & minds . In the case of the children, we prefer to provide food to those that can commit to some kind of positive & self enriching exchange – e.g. a meal in exchange for attending school, attending remedial lessons or some kind of life skills programme. Thus, we don’t only see food as filling a tummy, but also as an aid to health, learning, hope and a better, brighter future.
We strive to provide food that is good and nutritious in the most economical way possible, and to ensure that nothing goes to waste. For example, vegetable scraps are used in worm farms and compost heaps and seeds and pips used for bird food. It is also our vision to empower individuals by expanding our services and providing employment and/or business opportunities in the future.
As our name suggests we primarily act as a storehouse obtaining goods in bulk and as close to the source as possible. This means that we are either able to purchase food at a much lower price, and/or be able to secure regular bulk donations. In turn we re-distribute to those individuals, programmes, schools or organisations as needed, in smaller quantities, at no cost to them.
Currently we are able to provide meals for approximately R1/ meal. Our wish is to build strong, long-term relationships with individuals and companies that aid us in our undertaking and future meal planning for the many in need and just a little help to get them back on their own feet.
