Djembe Cape Town is an open djembe collaborative of beginners, improvers and drum masters who made the “Mother-City” their home. We offer you a fun, uplifting experience whilst learning genuine traditional rhythms from West Africa and other regions of the continent. An ancient healing tool, traditional African music creates an atmosphere of warmth, joy and connection between people.
Join our weekly drum circle held every Saturday from 3pm to 5pm at Touareg Trading on Longmarket Street (corner Long Street).
Founded by Manan Ajimah, who is a passionate and enthusiastic drummer from Ghana, the circle is suitable for “first touchers” and those wanting to expand their rhythm repertoire and drumming techniques. The group has some regular members but you can jump in and out. Djembe drums are available to hire, so no need to have your own drum, but you are most welcome to bring your own if you like.
There is also broad variety of djembe drums on sale, professionally crafted in different sizes, designs and timbers. Drum bags are also available in all sizes and with colorful designs.
We also offer re-skinning, re-tuning and re-roping services to make your drum sound beautiful again.
Want to delve deeper?
We offer private lessons that will help you to develop your rhythmic and solo skills at your own pace. The lessons are usually held at our shop and last for one to two hours. We are available throughout the week and will have a drum for you should you need one.
